Overview
The Summer Teaching Program is an outstanding opportunity for new and seasoned educators to invest five rewarding weeks in the lives of fellow educators in China, Mongolia or Laos. So rewarding is this experience that more than half of our participants are returning teachers from a previous summer – many of whom have returned multiple times. For many educators, serving in this program is the highlight of their year.

Those whom we teach in this highly valued program are dedicated national teachers of English, usually at the primary, middle or secondary school level. They are required to receive periodic ongoing education credits and since 1985 ELIC has had the privilege of serving in this key role. The focus is in providing opportunities to practice and upgrade both English speaking skills and language teaching methodology.
Because we have seasoned educators on each team of eight to ten, additional team members may have less teaching experience – those with degrees in other fields as well as college students, especially those majoring in English, education, TEFL or TESOL. Our comprehensive training prepares each participant for success both inside and outside of the classroom, ensuring a rewarding and memorable five weeks of service overseas.
Details & Requirements
Following a week and a half of training in Beijing, Ulaanbaatar or Vientiane, you will travel to your teaching location and meet the engaging teachers you will be serving. Each instructor on your team will teach a class of about sixteen to twenty adults and will spend three hours each weekday morning in the classroom, with a focus on improving listening and speaking skills. Afternoons and evenings focus on other activities including methodology sessions – typically given by the team leader with assistance from the team, and cultural demonstrations in which the team provides insights into aspects of North American culture and history. Your students reciprocate with similar cultural presentations about their country, using their English skills. This fast-moving, intensive schedule not only achieves the academic goals of the program but also brings about deep and rewarding friendships – some of which may continue long after your return to North America.
